Hoxnian interglacial c.424k-374k BC (MIS 11) A good Lower Paleolithic "Clactonian" Uniofacial Flint Proto-Axe found many years back at Wheelers Lane gravel pit, Canford, Dorset and from a Hampshire Geologists collection. Fabricated from a small pebble of blue / black flint, clearly worked on one side and at its point to form a distinctive functional digging or chopping point, pebble cortex remaining on wider grip end of tool and unworked side to aide grip in use, fine percsussive scars on point from repeated impact and use. A tactile piece which fits in the hand nicely affording a good grip of the tool. Intact and in very good condition with good surface ageing and pleasant patination, a nice example of an early stone age hand axe from a notable prehistoric site, 85mm long x 60mm wide x 47mm deep
