Product Description
MIS13 - MIS11 c.531,000 to 420,000 B.C. A pleasant Lower Palaeolithic "Mode 1" flint pebble hand axe / chopper found on the banks of the River Stour at Harkstead, Suffolk and from an old Suffolk collection. Fashioned from a flint cobble of dark black coloured flint with original cortex remaining over much of its surface for grip and as is typical for "Mode 1" choppers, just a few major flint removals and some subsequent reworking forms the main chopping blade. This example unusually has been worked to form a thinner blade more suited for cutting rather than chopping. An attractive old Palaeolithic colouration and lightly shiny patination to all worked surfaces, a pleasant example of this very early Palaeolithic tool, 96mm long x 65mm wide x 40mm thick
