Lower Paleolithic - (MIS9 to MIS8 dated layers c.324,000 - 284,000 years old). A good  Lower Paleolithic "Cortex backed" chert pointed hand axe from the famous and well documented early Paleolithic site of Broom Gravel Pit in the Axe Valley on the Devon / Dorset Border. From a Hampshire Geologists collection. A well defined chert hand axe clearly worked, with a wide body tapering down to functional point, one side worked, the other side still with original pebble cortex left insitu. Intact and in nice overall condition with good ageing and appealing old collection patination, a tactile piece and a scarce example of the type from this famous early prehistoric site, 121mm long x 70mm wide x 35mm thick
