A good pair of Medieval bronze Barrel padlocks, North Yorkshire
Our Price: £22.00

c.1300-1400 A.D. A good pair of Medieval bronze Barrel padlocks found in Yorkshire and from a Scottish collection. Barrel padlocks were widely used in the Medieval period for locking doors, cabinets and caskets and both would have once also had a separate small locking bar with elongated spring barbs that slotted into the main barrel body to lock it, a special slender key would then be needed to slide into the lock to compress the barbs and release the lock. As is common, the mall locking bars have been lost in antiquity but otherwise these padlocks are complete and good and an interesting pair of Medieval items, one measures 42mm x 23mm, the other 35mm x 21mm
