c.200,000 to 100,000 BC. A good Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Levallois Industry" flint hand axe found many years ago at Overstrand, Near Cromer, North Norfolk and from an old Norfolk collection. Clearly worked from a thick triangulated flake of a pleasant black and olive green flint, in turn struck from the top of a large pre-prepared flint core (i.e.Levallois), smooth underside but clearly worked on upper surface to form the axe blade edges on either side with a raised medial plateau on the top, small area or pebble cortex on butt end to enhance grip in use. Totally intact and in very good overall condition condition with good surface ageing and an attractive colouration and old patination. A well defined and appealing Early Neanderthal flint hand axe, approx. 85mm long x 71mm wide x 35mm thick
