c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A good Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Backed" flint knife found in the early part of the 20th Century in Peyzac Le Moustier, Dordogne, France and from an old French Lithic collection. Fashioned from a large thick flake of honey coloured flint which has then been bi-facially worked to form a clearly defined main cutting edge, some original pebble cortex remaining on back of knife to aide grip in the hand. An old ink inscription on one side citing "PAZAC" on the main worked face. Totally intact and in nice condition with an attractive old collection patina to worked surfaces, a pleasant example of its type, 115mm long x 52mm wide x 29mm thick
