c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A good Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Levallois" flint scraper with a nicely detailed fossil sponge inclusion found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. Formed from a small black flint flake struck from a prepared flint core with further retouching along main scraping and cutting edges to further hone and sharpen them, blade edges still sharp, unifacially worked. The fossil sponge inclusion was probably a thing of wonder to the original maker of scraper and this makes this piece that little bit more interesting. Totally intact and in very good condition with an attractive old collection patina. A nice example of the type from a famous Paleolithic site, 47mm wide x 44mm deep x 17mm at thickest point
