c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A good Paleolithic (Neanderthal) "Levallois" small flint spear head found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. Fashioned from a flake of pale grey coloured flint, well worked in a typical "Levallois" tradition on a flake struck from the top of a prepared flint core with further definition added to define the spear head and refined the tip. This point would likely have been used in a small thrusting spear for hunting smaller prey at close quarters. Small old chip to one side (not detracting) otherwise intact and in nice condition with a pleasant old collection patina, a nice example of its type, 87mm long x 60mm wide x 18mm thick
