Early Neolithic c.4000-3000 B.C. A good sized and pleasant Early Neolithic flaked axe originally found in Ayencourt Le Monchel, Northern France and from an old Sussex collection. A decent Early Neolithic flake axe, typically cruder than later examples but still a well worked example; extensively and bi-facially flaked around the blade edges with cortical areas remaining in the centre of the axe on either side; old inked inscription "Le Monchel" on one side. Probably once hafted in a wooden handle hence the cortex areas being left as is, as these would have been hidden when hafted. In good overall condition with nice surface aging and patination, a decent and very affordable example of the type, 130mm long x 60mm wide x 30mm thick.
