SOLD
Lower Paleolithic (MIS 11 - 9) c.410,000 to 324,000 BP. A huge & heavy Lower Paleolithic flint hand axe / chopper found some years back in the Solent River plateau gravels at Barton-on-sea, Hampshire and from a Hampshire Geologists collection. Well fashioned from a most attractive honey coloured flint, bi-facially worked with a well defined main side blade edge and some original pebble cortex remaining on butt / grip end. Unusually this large axe appears made solely for left hand use as whilst it fits perfectly in the left hand, it is difficult to grip firmly in the right hand. Some gentle water smoothing in parts and a lovely old surface ageing and shiny patination, a very large, tactile and appealing Lower Paleolithic hand axe, 150m long x 90mm wide x 48mm thick
