Product Description

Early Neolithic period c.4000 B.C. A Huge, heavy (>1kg) and superb Early Neolithic flint core hand axe found in the early 20th Century at the very famous Prehistoric site of Le Grand Pressigny, Touraine, France. Ex. Maurice Chevais Collection [Maurice Chevais (1880-1943) was a French composer and Inspector of School music teaching in Paris, a pioneer in the history of music teaching in fact and keen collector of French Lithics]. His huge prehistoric collection was amassed from 1910-1935 on his regular visits to the family home near Le Grand Pressigny. This imposing hand axe is fashioned from a large thick flint flake core of the attractive toffee / honey coloured flint so synonymous with Le Grand Pressigny, the core has then been expertly reworked and retouched bi-facially, all around its perimeter to form blade edges on either side, a distinct functional digging point at one end and a wide chopping / cutting blade at the opposite end. Attractive area of original cortex remaining along centre of upper side to aide grip in the hand when in use. Totally intact and in excellent condition with a lovely "old collection" shiny surface patina, A particularly large and imposing hand axe from both a very notable location and collection, Approx. 200mm long x 95mm at widest x 50mm at thickest and weighing in at just over 1kg. Comes with an acrylic display stand.
