Middle Paleolithic period c.100,000 to 50,000 B.C. A huge and excellent Paleolithic Neanderthal "Levallois Core" flint hand axe found in the 1940's in central France and from an old French collection amassed in the 1940/50's. A very substantial example, struck from the top of a very large flint nodule and as such still retaining much of its original pebble cortex on the outer side apart from where it has been repeatedly struck in typical Levallois technique to form the scalloped main chopping blade. Underside also retouched to enhance the tool and further define the main blade edges. Totally intact and in excellent condition with an old pleasant white and pale grey surface patination, old inked collection number on lower surface, an impressive and typically Neanderthal flint hand axe, 143mm wide x 108mm deep x 37mm thick
