Middle Paleolithic period c.100,000 to 50,000 B.C. A huge and excellent Paleolithic Neanderthal "Levallois Core" flint hand axe found in the 1950's/60's in Le Grand Pressigny, France and from an old French collection amassed in the 1950's/60's. A very substantial example in a lovely honey coloured flint, so typical of this area, struck from the top of a very large flint nodule and as such still retaining its original pebble cortex on the outer side apart from where it has been repeatedly struck in typical Levallois technique to form the scalloped main chopping blade. Underside also retouched to enhance the tool and further define the main blade edges. Totally intact and in excellent condition with a lovely old collection surface patination, An impressive and typically Neanderthal flint hand axe, 150mm wide x 130mm deep x 32mm thick
