Middle Bronze Age, c.1500-1150 B.C. A huge, rare and excellent Mid Bronze Age, bronze Palstave Axe with decorative blade, found near Portsmouth, Hampshire many years ago and from a Cornish private collection. PAS recorded and checked, relevant paperwork supplied with axe. Very nicely fashioned with a long but characteristic flared blade edge, elongate body featuring deep recesses either side for hafting into a split wooden handle for use and the securing loop on the top edge for the leather or sinew bindings. The blade also features raised edge ridges and a central raised rib along the centre, on either side. A good sized and heavy example; small chip to very end of butt, not detracting, otherwise totally intact, and in excellent condition, with good surfaces and a most attractive shiny orangey / brown surface patina, a very nice example of the type, 160mm long x 60mm across blade and 24mm at thickest point.
