c.Late 5th to 6th Century A.D. A huge, rare and superb Early Anglo Saxon Zoomorphic Cruciform bronze brooch, found in the 1970's in Caister, Lincolnshire and hails from an old Swiss collection (the Swiss collector paid £700 for this brooch in the 1990's). This very impressive brooch features a large ornate rectangular head plate with punched central annulet design within pelleted borders, bulbous arms / finials on the top and either side forming the characteristic Cruciform shape, small humped bow below leading into a smaller tapered plate once again featuring the central annulet and pellet design, side lappets on either side and below this a nicely detailed elongate lower catchplate section in the form of a Dragonseque head with bulbous eyes and large flared nostrils. Originally gilded or silvered but now merely patinated bronze. These huge brooches are almost always unearthed with fractures or breaks and this example typically has a single, barely discernible and professionally administered metallurgical repair to lower part of bow undertaken many decades ago and which has now re-patinated to blend in with the original patina, otherwise the brooch is totally intact and in lovely overall condition with good surfaces and a most attractive deep bronze patina, A rarely offered, very large and most impressive example of the type, 134mm long x 67mm wide x 25mm deep
