c.1st/2nd Century A.D. A huge, rare and excellent quality Roman Legionary Balteus (Aproned sword belt) openwork buckle plate, British. An impressive and expertly crafted buckle plate which would once have been part of a Roman Legionaires uniform forming the main fastening of a Balteus, a large Military leather belt richly decorated with ornate mounts and buckles with a leather apron at the front to which swords and daggers (Gladius) were hung. This Balteus plate is in excellent condition with good surfaces and most attractive overall deep shiny green patina. Found many years back in the North of England and from a Lancashire collection. A large, heavy and impressive Roman Military item, seldom offered, 85mm long x 25mm wide x 10mm at thickest.
