c.400,000 to 300,000 B.C. A large and beautiful Early Paleolithic hand axe from Sussex found 26/04/1930, reputedly from an old Museum collection in the South of England. Excellently crafted from a most attractive dappled honey / brown coloured flint with large pad of original cortex on butt end forming an effective grip in the hand. Old ink inscription citing the find date on the cortex area "26 04 30". Very tip lost in antiquity probably during use and seemingly retouched to prolong its usefulness. An old, feint hairline repair just down from tip presumably by one of the axes former keepers but does not detract from the piece. A lovely, large and tactile hand axe with superb colouration and a most appealing shiny old collection surface patina, a super example and if undamaged would have commanded quite a high price but this axe is a much more affordable proposition, 134mm long x 81mm wide x 37mm thick
