A large & excellent early Byzantine Terracotta oil lamp featuring Vine decoration (N28)
Our Price: £55.00

c.6th Century A.D. A large and excellent early Byzantine Terracotta oil lamp featuring a detailed and intertwined Vine decoration on either side of top surface around a raised keyhole shaped border which in turn surrounds the filler hole and small spout for the wick and a typical up swept handle at the rear of the lamp. These lamps would have been filled with oil and a wick inserted into the spout, then lit, and would have typically been used in the home much as candles still are today. From an old Hampshire collection. A few tiny chips here and there from its time buried in the Earth (not detracting) otherwise totally intact in nice condition overall with good sound surfaces and no repairs, a good and large example of the type, 110mm long x 80mm wide x 60mm at deepest
