Lower Paleolithic - (MIS9 to MIS8 dated layers c.324,000 - 284,000 years old). A large and excellent Lower Paleolithic Bi-facial Chert hand axe / chopper from the famous and well documented early Paleolithic site of Broom Gravel Pit in the Axe Valley on the Devon / Dorset Border. From a Hampshire Geologists collection. A heavy and substantial chert hand axe, clearly worked and featuring a wide butt end grip and a well defined, slightly denticulated but ribust blade edge down one side, simply worked on the other and a distinct functional tip. Totally intact and in lovely overall condition with good ageing and imbued with an appealing old collection patination, a very tactile piece and a scarce example of the type, especially this large and from this famous early prehistoric site, 130mm long x 110mm wide x 30mm thick
