c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A large & excellent Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) flint core hand axe found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. A large elongate flint blade core of attractive black and honey coloured flint which has been subsequently re-worked to form a pronounced chisel like axe blade at one end in order to be re-purposed as a large hand axe. Bifacially and well worked and with some original pebble cortex remaining on one side. An old ink inscription on one side citing "LES FERELIES PAYZAC" on the main worked face. Totally intact and in lovely condition with an attractive old collection shiny patina to worked surfaces, a good sized and attractive example of its type, 148mm long x 60mm wide x 53mm thick
