c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A large, superb and very nicely worked Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Tortoise Core" flint hand axe/scraper found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. A chunky and tactile tool with a flat underside, copiously worked and re-worked around its perimeter to form very well defined and almost denticulated scraping and cutting edges and overall somewhat like a stylised shell of a Tortoise shell in form. Some original pebble cortex remaining on upper surface of the tool to enhance its grip in the hand. Old ink inscription on one side citing "PAYZAC" and on the base more details of its exact find location "Top Farm plateau above Le Moustier". Totally intact and in lovely condition with an attractive old collection patina, a very nice example of its type, 90mm long x 50mm wide x 34mm high
