A large Third Intermediate Period Faience Ushabti figure dating from the 21st Dynasty c.1068-945 B.C. from an early 20th Century collection. Once bright turquoise in colour with all details, including wig and facial details painted on in a black glaze. The turquoise faïence has now darkened to a greenish hue and the much of the painted detail has now faded from its time buried in the sand but feint traces of the painted details can still be made out in parts together with feint vestiges of painted hieroglyphs down the front panel (not really evident in the digital photos); and typical of this period, the back still shows a clearly painted seed bag. [The term "Ushabti" translates as "Answerer" as many of these servant figures were placed by mourners into tombs in the belief that they would magically animate and undertake the every day chores for the deceased in the after-life.] The Ushabti is otherwise intact and un-repaired and has been attractively mounted on to a clear Perspex display plinth, a pleasant and good sized early Ushabti measuring c. 122mm tall (142mm on plinth).
