c.8000 to 6000 B.C. A large and excellent Mesolithic tanged flint knife / saw found many years back in Dorset and from a Bournemouth collection. Expertly fashioned from a large elongate flint flake struck from a core, largely flat underside but well worked on the upper surface with clear medial ridge and well defined and worked blades on either side, both blades somewhat denticulated so also possibly used as a hand saw. The tool tapers on either side at the butt end to well defined squarish tang suggesting that this knife / saw was once hafted, secured with resin and sinew into a bone or wooden handle for use. A lovely example of the type with good surfaces and ageing, a pleasant overall old patination with some iron oxide highlights adding to its visual appeal, 110mm long x 45mm wide x 14mm thick
