c. 2nd/3rd Century A.D. A large and heavy Roman "Samian ware" rim fragment from huge bulbous storage jar found many years ago in Norfolk and from an old Norfolk collection. A well defined thick rim at the top with a further raised decorative band below. Traces of black residue on the inner side suggesting that at some stage this vessel was used for cooking with. A large and imposing piece of Samian Ware pottery, outer sheen now dulled from time buried in the earth but otherwise in good condition with nice sound surfaces of good colour, rare this large, 110mm wide x 108mm deep x 40mm at thickest
