Jurassic Period. c.180 million years old, A large and impressive, prepared and matrix-free fossil Ammonite of the Hildoceras Bifrons Sp. found in Whitby, North Yorkshire in the early 20th Century and hails from an old London collection. [Ammonites were early ancestors of Squids, there were a great many differing species ranging in size from a few millimetres to c.2 meters in diameter and often with very elaborately coiled and decorated shells]. An excellent and imposing example of the type from an old collection, totally intact, matrix-free and in very nice overall condition, max.diameter 118mm x 22mm thick
