c.1300-1400 A.D. A large and impressive Medieval lozenge shaped lead personal seal found many years ago close to a Castle in North Yorkshire and from a Durham private collection. A much larger than normal example, obviously once belonging to a person of some status. A small central piercing making the central design a little indistinct but certainly worthy of further investigation; however the surrounding engraved legends with Maltese Cross at the top point, all still bold clear and the seal would probably make a reasonable impression, good enough to allow the legend to be deciphered and the owners name to be found. Some minor knocks as is to be expected for ancient lead and its centuries buried in the ground but otherwise a good example of the type, 48mm long x 30mm wide.
