Ptolemaic Period c.300-31 B.C. A large and nicely carved Ancient Egyptian steatite (soapstone) Scarab beetle amulet. The Scarab has a flat underside with the top side finely carved to represent the head and carapace of the Scarab beetle, sacred to the Egyptians. Amulets of this size with no pierceings or suspension loops were intended to be wrpapped within the bandages on a Mummy to protect the deceased in the afterlife. Excavated in Egypt in the early 20th Century and from an old Suffolk collection. A large and pleasant example, 24mm long x 20mm wide x 8mm thick.
