c.2100 B.C. A large and rare Sumerian baked clay tablet featuring 6 lines of Cunieform script found in the 1950's and from a Hertfordshire private collection. Cuneiform script is one of the earliest known systems of writing distinguished which consisted of wedge-shaped marks impressed onto clay tablets using a blunt reed as a stylus. Often these tablets detail some form of legal or monetary transaction and if the record was to be kept the tablets would be baked in a kiln. If the record was only temporary the tablet was not fired but later broken and ground down again to mix as clay once more, an early form of recycling it seems. This is a much larger than normal example with 6 wide impressed lines of Cunieform on the upper half and remnants of others below. Damage and a repair to the lower half of tablet and a few minor knocks as is to be expected for its great age otherwise a good example of its type. Cunieform is increasingly hard to find nowadays, display stand included, tablet measures 87mm long x 52mm wide x 22mm thick.
