c.3rd Century B.C. A large and superb quality cream ware terracotta jug from Ancient Carthage, (In modern day Tunisia, North Africa). Carthage was the richest and most powerful city on the Mediterranean until Rome exerted its influence upon the world. Several major wars ensued over the centuries with Rome and was finally defeated and destroyed during the 3rd Punic war (B.C.146-149). This superb quality jug is expertly crafted with a flat base, bulbous body tapering to narrower elongate neck topped with a bead rim and a large strap handle between the neck and shoulder of the vessel. Multiple ridge decoration around neck. From an old established British private collection. Totally intact and in lovely condition throughout with no damage, repairs or restoration whatsoever. Good sound surfaces. A choice artefact from this most famous of ancient cities, 182mm tall x 135mm at widest.
