Mayan Classic Period c.A.D 250 - 900. A large and superbly detailed terracotta bust of a Ancient Mayan High Priest or chieftain excavated in Southern Mexico many years ago and from an old English collection. The Ancient Mayans largely populated Southern Mexico, Guatamala and Honduras. Very nicely detailed clearly showing bold facial details, ornate high head ceremonial dress and large ear spools. Most likely the top of a much larger ceremonial or votive statuette and most probably was once brightly painted with coloured pigments, all colouration now lost however. Bust intact and in excellent condition overall. A rare, very large and impressive Mayan artefact, supplied with a plastic display stand, 102mm high x 96mm wide x 34mm thick.
