Our Price: £0.00

SOLD

c.1st / 2nd Century A.D. A particularly large and very nice quality Roman "Samian Ware" decorative glazed pottery shard found in Cambdridgeshire on a Villa site and from a Coventry collection. The shard is probably from the rim and side of a very large, high quality and impressive Samian ware decorative Urn and would have been originally manufactured in Gaul (France). This large samian segment was excavated broken in two pieces but has been carefully repaired to whole at some stage in the past. The shard features a distinct ribbed rim at top, decorative swagged border below and below this, separate pellet bordered decorative panels featuring a large tree leaf and another a Bird standing right. In very nice condition with good colour and surfaces with an attractive shiny glaze, a much larger than normal example, 49mm x 45mm.
