c.3000 B.C. A large and very nicely worked Neolithic knapped flint axe found near Bury St.Edmunds, Suffolk in the early 20th Century and form an old Suffolk collection. Expertly fashioned from a pleasant mottled dark brown and grey flint; the greyer side also features a small sunken natural feature in its mid section containing tiny quartz crystals, a feature that no doubt appealed to the original maker of the axe. A sizable axe, bi-facially worked with good blade edges all round, clear working with some nice retouching to blade edges; most likely once hafted into a large wooden axe handle for use. The narrower hafting section has an old chip to very tip (not detracting) otherwise the axe is totally intact and in excellent condition with good surface ageing and a lovely old collection patina. A good sized and appealing Neolithic axe, 152mm long x 62mm wide x 32mm thick.
