Hoxnian interglacial c.424k-374k BC (MIS 11) A large, excellent and attractive Lower Paleolithic "Bone Crusher" Flint Hand Axe found many years back at Jaywick, Essex and from an old Norfolk collection. A sizable and heavy tool fabricated from a large nodule of black and brown flint that would have been used for smashing open large mammal bones to extract the nutritious bone marrow; The hand axe is worked on most of its surface with just a small area of pebble cortex remaining on one side, probably to aide grip in the hand. Intact and in very nice condition for its great age with a most attractive old Paleolithic shiny patina and colouration, with light iron deposits from its time buried in the Earth merely adding to its array of colours and good surface ageing, an excellent example of an early stone age hand axe from a notable prehistoric site, 95mm long x 75mm wide x 70mm
