c.3rd/4th Century A.D. A large, heavy and unusual Roman lead shell appliqué (or weight) unearthed on a Roman site in Nottinghamshire. A mould formed lead representation of a Scallop like sea shell, mould formed upper surface and flat backed; if not a weight of some form, possibly one of many shell appliqués that were used to adorn a large item of furniture or even a casket of some form. Some light impact damage from its time buried in the earth but otherwise intact and in reasonable condition for ancient lead, A very unusual and seldom offered artefact, 65mm long x 55mm wide x 8mm thick, supplied in display box
