Middle Paleolithic period c.400,000-300,000 B.C. A large and pleasant Mid-Paleolithic Acheulian flint hand axe found in the 1950's/60's in West Central France and from an old French collection amassed in the 1950's/60's. A fairly substantial example in an attractive ochre and grey banded flint and a small area containing remains of a small embedded fossil sponge and quartz crystal inclusions towards the tip on one side, obviously a small feature that must have appealed to the maker of the axe. Bi-facially and clearly worked with clearly defined blade edges all round. Intact and in good overall condition, old collection number in ink on side edge of butt, an imposing piece to hold and with a attractive colouration, A decent early Stone Age hand axe, 128mm long x 86mm wide x 38mm thick
