c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A large Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) unifacial flint spear head with hafting notch found in the early part of the 20th Century at the famous Neanderthal site of Peyzac Le Moustier, in the Dordogne, France and from an old French lithic collection. Fashioned from a large triangulated flake of cream & ochre coloured flint, largely flat underside but unifacially worked on upper face to form a blade edge on either side together with a medial ridge along its length, a large notch features at butt end of the spear head which was no doubt a "hafting notch", used for binding the spear head into the split end of a wooden shaft using resin and sinew and most likely from a small thrusting spear. An old ink inscription on one side citing "LES FERELIES PAYZAC" on the main worked face. Very tip lost in antiquity, otherwise intact and in very nice condition, a good sized and pleasant spear head from a very notable prehistoric site, 87mm long x 45mm wide x 15mm thick
