c.2200-1800 B.C. A large, rare and impressive Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age pottery spindle whorl found in Germany many years ago and from an old London collection. Central hole for insertion of wooden shaft to the end of which natural wool fibres would have been attached and the whole assembly then spun to make woollen yarn which in turn would be used to weave cloth for making basic garments. Hand made from a coarse clay and baked in an open fire to harden. A large and impressive example, a rare and seldom offered Neolithic / Bronze Age domestic artefact, a few old minor peripheral knocks otherwise totally intact and in very good condition with stable surfaces, 58mm diameter x 36mm high.
