Mid-Acheulian period c.500,000 B.C. A large, heavy and super quality Early Paleolithic Mid-Acheulian Handaxe found many years back in the Gorgol Region, Senegal River, Mauritania, Africa and from an old Scottish collection. A very early but expertly worked Paleolithic handaxe fashioned from a most attractive Toffee / Honey coloured hard stone, nicely shaped and symmetrical with a well defined functional point. The axe has a gentle overall smoothing and surface ageing from its many millennia buried in the earth plus the axe is now also embued with a very appealing and attractive old desert patination. Totally intact and in excellent condition for such an early piece, a very pleasant, good sized and tactile axe; a very nice example of one of the earliest man made tools from the birthplace of civilisation, supplied with a large clear plastic display stand, 165mm long x 97mm wide x 45mm thick.
