c.2500-2000 B.C. A large, superb and very unusual Neolithic flint axe found many years back in Baumber, East Lindsey, Linconlshire. From an old established Cornish collection. The most unusual and striking feature of this beatifully worked axe is that the blade edge was knapped and then smoothly polished on one side but at sometime during its use (and clearly contemporary with the axe) was expertly retouched on the opposite side with the blade edge being finely pressure flaked all around its perimeter, possibly to redifine or re-sharpen the axe, clearly a treasured axe and possibly done to either enhnace the piece as a status item or maybe to prolong its usefullness. Blade edge still excellent and sharp and does not shows little evidence of any impact or use, so this axe may have well been for status or trading purposes. Totally intact, in excellent condition with a very attractive old collection toning and shiny surface patination / ageing; a lovely, very tactile and scarce Neolithic item, 172mm long x 78mm wide x 29mm thick.
