A large, very rare and totally intact Anglo Saxon Clay loom weight, Ipswich, Old Collection piece.
Our Price: £110.00

c.8th / 9th Century A.D. A large, very rare and totally intact Anglo Saxon clay loom weight found in the early-mid 20th Century on a known Anglo Saxon artisans site in Ipswich, Suffolk and from an old Essex Collection. This large "doughnut" shaped loom weight was roughly hand formed (traces of finger and nail impressions can still be seen in its surface in fact) from clay and then baked in a fire to harden and this weight would have been one of many used on a large wooden standing loom in order to weight down and hold taught, the "warp" (vertical) yarns on the loom for the weaving of woollen fabrics in readiness for making clothing or blankets. These loom weights seldom survive intact, are rare as a result and seldom offered for sale. A rare chance to add one to your Anglo Saxon collection, Approximately 108mm diameter x 34mm thick
