Mesolithic to Early Neolithic period c.8000 - 6000 years B.C. A large, well worked and excellent Mesolithic flint hand pick found many years back in the famous historic area of Cranborne Chase in Dorset. Expertly fashioned from the top of a large flint nodule and then carefully worked all round to form a gently curved pick with the natural pebble cortex forming a nicely rounded handle at one end. The main body of the pick then copiously worked to form a tapering functional tip. The tool has taken on an attractive overall white surface patination from its time buried in the chalky soil and is further enhanced buy iron oxide highlights to the percussion ridges. A super example of the type, very tactile and rarely offered, a nice stone age tool, Approx 160mm long x 40mm at thickest, tapering down to around 5mm at the tip.
