c.4000-3000 B.C. A large, well worked Neolithic flaked and semi-polished flint axe head found in Colchester, Essex in 1974 from an old Suffolk collection. Slender in form and expertly fashioned from a pleasant cream and pale grey coloured flint, copiously worked over both sides with nicely defined blade edges all round, semi-polished towards the blade end. It would have once been hafted into a wooden handle using natural resin and sinew for use. Small collection label on one side citing "Colchester 1974". A couple of old chips, one to very tip of butt end and on one side of main axe blade, neither detracting from the piece however, otherwise totally intact and in very nice overall condition with a pleasant overall ageing and patina, a particularly large and affordable example of the type, 190mm long x 58mm across blade x 24mm thick
