c.4th-3rd Century B.C. A nice and good sized Ancient Greek black glazed terracotta pedestalled Salt Bowl (Salter). From the Greek colonies in Campania, Southern Italy. An attractive salt bowl standing on a small pedestal ring base, which would have been a common site on Ancient Greek dining tables as salt was a vital and highly prized commodity. Original shiny black glaze now largely faded but traces still remain in parts, a couple of areas of minor rubbing to glaze from its time buried in the earth, otherwise totally intact and in very good condition, a pleasant example of the type, Ex Old West Country collection, 97mm diameter, 30mm high.
