c.3rd/4th Century A.D. A nice and ornate Roman bronze Fire Starter [Fire lighter] featuring an ornate openwork carved design. These items were essential everyday items generally carried in a small pouch along with a small piece of iron or flint and some dry tinder or fibres. The Fire Starter was then gripped tightly between the fiingers and thumb and the flattened edge at its base was then quickly struck onto the edge of the flint or iron in order to produce sparks. The resultant sparks would de directed at some dry tinder or fibres so as to smoulder and then ignite. This Fire starter is totally intact and in very nice condition with an overall green surface patination, Ex London collection, 38mm wide x 20mm high x 4mm thick.
