c.2500-2000 B.C. A nice Neolithic flint hammer stone found near Stowmarket, Suffolk. Fashioned from a pleasant dark grey & black flint cobble. Original flint cortex left still covering most of the outer faces and peppered all over with small impact marks from its use. Hammer stones were used in the manufacture of large stone axes and would be used for hammering away tiny fragments of flint or stone in order to smooth the axes outer surfaces in readiness for the axe then being finely polished using coarse sand, water and a much harder grinding stone. A nice example of its type with good surface ageing and colouration, 50mm long x 55mm wide x 47mm deep.
