c.6th/5th Century B.C. A nice upper section from an Ancient Greek terracotta stattuette of the Goddess Demeter found at Corinth, Central Greece many years back and from a Norfolk collection. Demeter was the Goddess of the Harvest and these figures were no doubt produced and placed in home shrines for prayer so that Demeter granted the people a favourable harvest. Demeter is depicted standing, arms by her side and wearing a veiled head dress. Probably once painted with coloured pigments (now gone). Some light whitish surface accretion as excavated but otherwise intact and in good condition for her great age. Supplied with small plastic display stand. An appealing and affordable Ancient Greek stattuette, 85mm tall (122mm on plinth) x 37mm wide x 30mm deep
