c.60,000 to 40,000 B.C. A nicely worked Upper Paleolithic (Mousterian / Neanderthal) flint hand axe originally unearthed near London and from a Hertfordshire collection. Skilfully manufactured from a flint nodule of attractive mottled dark flint with the outer cortex being knapped away on either side towards one end with some subsequent re-touching to form a very distinct and functional axe blade, the remaining cortex being left to effectively form the grip of the hand axe. Blade surfaces with good ageing and patination, a nice example of the type, 125mm long x 80mm wide x 43mm thick.
