Our Price: £0.00

SOLD

c.7th/8th Century A.D. A pair of large Anglo Saxon pottery Spindle Whorls (for spinning yarn) found in Dorset many years back and from an Oxfordshire collection. Spindle whorls were circular weights with a central hole for insertion of a wooden spindle to which raw wool was attached and the whole assembly spun to create wollen yarn for weaving and the making of cloth. One large spindle whorl convex on top surface and convex on its underside measuring 47mm diameter x 28mm deep, the other 40mm diameter x 20mm deep, both in nice condition with good surfaces and just a few old knocks, a good value pair of decent sized Saxon whorls.
