SOLD

c.1st Century B.C. to 1st Century A.D. A pair of large Iron Age (Celtic) period terracotta Spindle Whorls (found in Germany and from a German collection. Probably manufactured from the recycled bases of terracotta pots with a hole bored through the centres to allow them to be fixed onto the ends thin wooden shafts, to which the other ends would have natural wool attached and the whole assembly then then spun to spin the wool into yarn for weaving. Some light surface accretion as excavated but otherwise good and intact, an interesting and affordable pair of Iron Age domestic items,  one measures 56mm at widest, the other 68mm.
