c.10,000-8,000 B.C. A pleasant and scarce Mesolithic flint "Tranchet" axe originally found many years back close to the famous Culverwell habitation site in Portland Bill, Isle of Portland, Dorset and from a Hampshire Geologists private collection but originally from a much older collection amassed in the 1970's. Although Mesolithic axes are traditionally cruder than some other types of Stone Age axes, this example is attractive and well worked for the period, and a well defined example of a Mesolithic axe; The axe features the typical oblique struck "Tranchet" functional blade edge. Totally intact, in excellent condition with fashioned from a pleasant white flint with good surface ageing and light iron oxide highlights to some ridges further adding to its appeal. A pleasant and tactile example of the type, 90mm long x 42mm wide x 28mm thick.
